Dissertation Abstracts - 2 Reasons You Need Them

Dissertation Abstracts - 2 Reasons You Need ThemDissertation Abstracts is an important part of the entire dissertation writing process. When someone reads your dissertation they are looking at words, phrases and ideas.Abstracts should be concise and to the point. They should make the reader know what the dissertation is about in a few sentences, and not leave them thinking 'What?'It's also very important that the abstract states exactly the topic or theme of the dissertation. The abstract should not be an afterthought, but rather a part of the first paragraph of the dissertation itself. The reasons for this are two-fold. First it saves time reading your dissertation when you're searching for the specific title of the paper. The second reason is that if your abstract is not clearly written and closely describes your research topic you risk losing readers who are looking for the specific title of the paper. The reasons for avoiding italics or other styles are similar to the reasons for u sing the title first and nothing else. Readers who have no idea what the abstract means cannot make that connection between the topic and the dissertation. I've seen this happen so many times that I cringe every time.A concise title will allow the reader to easily connect the abstract with the dissertation and give them a better chance to read the entire dissertation. I have yet to see a dissertation where an abstract did not include the exact title of the dissertation, and that is a good thing.Another thing to consider is the dissertation abstracts is absolutely necessary. The first one in a thousand or more people who read your paper is going to read your abstract first, and this is the only way they'll catch a glimpse of your research topic. It's a pretty safe bet that if your abstract is a little vague, it won't get read, and if it doesn't get read, the focus group surveys you are hoping for won't happen either. Be clear and concise, it's the best course of action when it comes t o writing dissertation abstracts.
